An increasingly important institution of Canadian
power is the Supreme Court of Canada. In recent years it
has used the Charter of Rights and Freedoms -- written
into the Canadian Constitution in 1982 -- to strike down
laws seen as impinging on rights of various groups or
individuals. Some of these rulings have been
controversial, and have drawn attention to the court,
whose members are appointed by the Prime Minister. © 1999 Richard McGuire
