Tour boats, such as this one, also travel on the
Rideau Canal, providing a scenic ride along Ottawa's many
parks. Though built between 1826 and 1832 to handle
commercial and military shipping at a safe distance from
the United States, the canal now handles mainly pleasure
craft. The canal system extends 200 km between Ottawa and
Kingston, though much of it uses natural waterways.
Through Ottawa, the canal follows a separate route from
